This is definitely one of the harder posts I’ve sat down to type. Spanky, Shannon’s parents’ dog, moved on to doggie heaven yesterday. He always got the “he’s a bit crazy” introduction to anybody who hadn’t met him since I’ve known him. But in the past two years, I got to hang out with him, I can certainly attest to that rather random introductory sentence. He was, after all, the only dog I know who was crazy enough to swim hours on out in the pool until the age of 15. And even though I can dive into the myriad of health-related problems that he had to struggle through in his last days, I’d rather just end with this picture and poem.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you waken in the morning’s hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

He is swimming in heaven and all the angels are watching…
Ditto Shannon. I’m sure he’s doing real well out there in doggie heaven!
A great set of pictures for a great dog. He looks very content diving right in! In doggie heaven, he’s probably got his own pool of clear, cool water and nothing but warm, bright days.
I’m so sorry that you lost such a great friend. They really do make your day all that much brighter.
Shannon and Michael: My heartfelt sympathy goes to you on your painful loss. Thanks for sharing your memories with us.
Dear Michael and Shannon,
I’m sorry to hear the lost of Spanky. It’s always hard losing your “buddy,” just remember those wonderful memories together.
Thanks for all those kind words from everyone. I’m sure Spanky’s up there getting to know Buffy (aka Bok) and Bingo right now
Aren’t they all cocker spaniels? They’d get along quite well.
Dear Shannon,
It sounds as though you gave Spanky a wonderful life! My malamute, Lou, and 2 cats, Bailey, and Stripe passed away not long ago. All from old age. I’m sure that they are already chasing each other around with all of the other beloved creatures ‘up there’. Blessings to you all.
That is a beautiful poem…I’m very sorry for your loss.
Spanky was a great dog, and made life the biggest joy. I could consider him more than just a furry friend, but he was a family member, best friend, and practically a brother. Who else would race us down the street on rollerblades and enjoy it?! He will be missed. Thank you for all the smiles and kisses buddy!
Thank you everyone for your kind words… I know it means a lot to my family.
