When a 12-year-old girl in Farmer City, Illinois found out the dogs that were part of her local police department didn’t have any vests to protect them while on duty, she decided to do something about it.

Cheye Beres did some research and found that the vests, which would help protect the dogs from bullet and knife wounds, would cost about $1,500 each. She has already raised $500, and hopes to raise more with the 30 or so canisters she has placed in local businesses.

In addition to protecting the dog from injury, the lightweight vests are made of a material that would help keep the dogs cool.
