smartdog.jpgWhen it comes to “Doggie Smarts,” most of us dog owners think our canine sidekick is the brainiest on the block.

Dr. Stanley Coren, author of  the book: The Intelligence of Dogs, has compiled a list that ranks 110 dog breeds on the basis of their intelligence (more than 200 professional dog breeders helped compile the list).

If you don’t see your dog’s breed on the list, don’t worry, it’s just an average…please don’t tell your dog to bite me…

1. Border Collie
2. Poodle
3. German Shepherd
4. Golden Retriever
5. Doberman Pincher
6. Shetland Sheepdog
7. Labrador Retriever
8. Papillon
9. Rottwieler
10. Australian Cattle Dog

Yay for Pom Pom the Papillon! By the way, I sat in on Dr. Coren’s talk at a psychology conference years ago and he was fantastic!

Oh…that’s a great question. I wonder if there’s a way to access the entire list of hundreds and hundreds of breeds! I remember from Dr. Coren’s talk that near the bottom of the list were bulldogs and terriers…although that doesn’t mean they’re NOT smart, because all dogs are brilliant!
