doghearing1.jpgIt’s a question most dog owners never think to ask: What do I do if my dog is having trouble hearing?

At the Bioacoustics and Canine Audiology Clinic at the University of Cincinnati, in-depth hearing tests are provided for dogs. The clinic also researches methods of improving diagnosis and non-medical treatment of their hearing problems.

Some of the tests conducted at the clinic include measuring the inner ear’s echo response to tones, as well as MRIs and ultrasounds.

Staff members believe more of these clinics could help raise awareness of hearing problems and deafness in dogs.

Hearing loss in dogs can be caused by noise, trauma, aging and inherited genetic defects.

The average cost for the test is $75.

K9 Commentary:

It’s awesome to see specialized services like this becoming increasingly available for dogs. One of the most heartbreaking things to see happen to a dog is deafness–knowing there are clinics that offer tests and assistance is a great sign of the progress being made in the veterinary field.
