Back in 2004 P.C. (Pre-Casper), Cindy and I were still figuring out the dog world. We had the dog walks, buying of accessories and grooming down pat. We thought we had the dog food figured out until my little sister, who works at a pet store, told us that the soft dog food we were mixing in with Pom’s hard food was the equivalent to feeding our dog fast-food.
We’ve learned a lot about dog food over the past four years. We no longer buy food that contains animal by-products or contains anything that has words that cannot be pronounced and aren’t found in the dictionary.
For the past few months, we’ve been feeding Pom and Capser “Newman’s Own” organic dog food. It doesn’t contain any by-products and is loaded with organic and natural ingredients.
The dogs have always been wishy-washy about eating dry dog food alone, mainly because we’ve always spoiled them by adding in soft food (in Pom’s case, she now has to have soft food mixed in because she doesn’t have many teeth left!). Casper loves of the taste of this food so much, we’ve stopped giving him the soft stuff (no soft food=better for doggie teeth).
Newman’s Own dog food used to be somewhat difficult to find–previously you could only find it at small organic food stores and various independent pet stores. This unfoturnately, makes the bags of food super expensive. However, Target has recently started carrying bags of the food, and the price is very reasonable (around 12 bucks for a 7-lb. bag of food).
Pros: All-natural ingredients, dogs seem to love the taste. Comes in both adult and senior fomulas. Another great plus: Newman’s Own does not test on pets, unlike many of the major pet food brands. Ok, one more: The dog’s poop does not stink! Since the food is made with all-natural, human-grade ingredients, you won’t be smacked with that stinky poop smell when you bend down pick up those droppings.
Cons: Hard to find. Largest size bag your can buy seems to be 7 lbs.

While I applaud your decision to feed your companions a “better” dog food, there is something even better that you can do.
Make a fresh meal with real meat for your dogs. Casper and Pom will love you for it.
We use Dr. Harvey’s Canine Health and it makes the fresh meal task really, really easy.
They use organic ingredients too and it is such an amazing healthy way to feed your dogs. We just add the meat, sometimes turkey, sometimes chicken, sometimes beef and oil and we have a great meal for our dogs. My oldest dog had lots of health problems and this food changed his/our lives. I have friends who had similar experiences with skin conditions and allergies. They switched to Dr. Harvey’s and the skin cleared up.
I think it is just the next step on the journey to feeding your dogs the very best food that you can.
It is important that we all understand the dangers in feeding commercial foods with chemicals and preservatives and by-products. I think that Dr. Harvey’s has come up with the best solution and they are a great company to work with.
I hope that you will check it out and that your babies love this food as much as mine do!
I have a 13 year old beagle who was loosing his pep and his coat was dull. Someone told me about Dr. Harveys and what a difference a dog food makes. He has a lot more pep and after a few weeks his coat started getting shiny again and there was less shedding. Now he seems eager to go for his walks and I am grateful that I changed to Dr. Harveys . I can see a remarkable difference in my dog Boo.
I adopted an eighteen month old pit bull. When I first took her in she shed so much I thought she would be bald. Her teeth looked liked they would need to be cleaned soon. She had an ear infection and some sort of fungus in the pads of her feet. I switched her to Paul Newmans dog food and the difference is heart-warming. She hardly sheds now, her teeth are clean, her breath is sweet, her ears clear as are the pads of her feet. She acts like a puppy. Everywhere I take her people stop me to tell me how beautiful she is and remark on her shiny coat. I’m a believer.
